Us Against Whatever

As part of this years Arts Festival

Over the 3 days prior to the Arts Festival our Performing Arts Department put on a fantastic rendition of ‘Us Against Whatever’, a quirky musical that explores Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League in 2008 and the 2016 Brexit vote. Set almost completely in a karaoke bar, this unexpected combination resulted in an atmospheric, exciting performance that was sold out for 2 out of 3 nights! Our Head of Department, Andy Pullen, works tirelessly to create these performances throughout the year and this is what he had to say about this one…

“This is a play about Brexit, and it would have been startlingly easy for Maureen Lennon to write a play about division here, but she resolutely does the opposite. This ClassAction (51福利社 theatre group) production focuses on unity and togetherness, the community that binds us together – the feeling of hope and home. And then ….. the first act is smudged in the second in such a way as to leave the audience stunned and subdued. Celebration is inverted, unity pushed outwards. At the end, the call for hope comes from voices wracked with tears.

Us Against Whatever sings a refrain of hope even as it calls out from a place of despair. This piece showcases the heart and soul of ClassAction, passionate, driven – taking our young practitioners and giving them a space and a voice to share their views of our world today.”
